Medical Discharge cases
There are several processes that are undertaken following Service personnel being medically discharged from HM Armed Forces. These are as follows:
We will automatically receive copies of your service medical documents (F MED 4).
If your Service ended after 6 April 2005 your papers will automatically be considered under the new Armed Forces
Compensation Scheme. However, if the incident/condition that resulted in you being invalided occurred before 6 April 2005 your papers will also be considered under the War Pensions Scheme.
If your Service ended after 6 April 2005 and the incident/condition that resulted in you being invalided also occurred after that date, your papers will only be considered under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme
Your War Pensions Scheme reference number will be your National Insurance number.
Your Armed Forces Compensation Scheme reference number will be your Service number.
We will send you a form requesting further details. For example, details about your GP (if you have registered), NHS hospitals you have attended and banking details.Stage 2
Our clerical and/or medical staff will look at the information received and will decide if a decision can be made. If a decision cannot be made we may request some additional medical evidence. We may also need to contact you to request information about accidents or incidents that happened during your Service. There may be times when we arrange for you to be medically examined.Stage 3
If we do arrange for you to be medically examined we will ask the Medical Service Centre that deals with your area to arrange a priority appointment for you. If the time or place of the appointment they allocate you is not convenient to you, you should contact the centre and they will change the arrangements.Stage 4
Once we have all the details we need one of our medical advisers (War Pensions Scheme)or claims assessors (Armed Forces Compensation Scheme) will consider the evidence and make a decision.
We will write to you to let you know the decision of your claim. We will notify the Armed Forces Personnel Administration Agency (AFPAA) of our decision.
